Advanced use of Home Assistant

In our series of posts on using Yoctopuce modules with Home Assistant, we're going to show you how to integrate the more advanced functions of Yoctopuce modules, which are not directly offered by MQTT discovery. This will enable you, for example, to control a Neopixel RGB LED panel from Home Assistant, display information on an external Yoctopuce screen, or control an external device via an RS-485 link.

Integrating remote sensors in Home Assistant

We've already shown you how to integrate Yoctopuce sensors in Home Assistant, by configuring a Yoctopuce hub to exchange data with an MQTT broker on the local network. But how do you go about integrating in Home Assistant sensors installed in another site without access to the local network, or even in the middle of nowhere with only a GSM connection?

Migrating from USB to an Internet connection

Yoctopuce sells USB modules designed to operate when they are directly plugged into a USB port on your computer. But it is also possible to operate your Yoctopuce modules remotely via a network connection, using a YoctoHub for example. The Yoctopuce API was designed to switch from one mode to the other in a trivial way, so much so that we never thought to explain the principle clearly. An oversight we're now putting right.
