New product: the Yocto-PT100

You asked for it, here it is! A new USB temperature sensor is expanding our range: the Yocto-PT100. It's the ultimate temperature sensor for the most advanced needs. With a sensitivity of 0,01°C, nothing can escape its notice. The absolute measure accuracy follows the 1/10 DIN B standard, that is 0,03°C + 0,05%. Hard to beat...

Measuring temperatures with a platinum (Pt100) probe is by definition the most precise measuring method. It's the method used throughout the world to define the temperature scale between fixed points defined by physical phenomena. Moreover, most temperature sensors contained in a single chip hide in their heart a small piece of platinum. Thanks to the fact that the Yocto-PT100 allows the probe to be moved away from the module itself, this product enables you to measure the temperature at a precise location, away from the influences of the interface module.

To use a Yocto-PT100, you need a Pt100 probe. It's usually a small piece of very precise platinum alloy, with two, three, or four wires soldered at its end. We don't provide any Pt100 with the module, because a project needing the precision of a Pt100 has specific requirements that a generic Pt100 wouldn't fulfill. However, you can find a whole range of Pt100 from different suppliers, for example from LabFacility. Very high precision Pt100 probes (1/10 DIN B standard) are available from about 22 Euros.

We must give you an explanation concerning the connection of a Pt100 probe to the module. The minimum necessary to measure the resistance at the ends of a Pt100 is obviously two wires. But if we use only two wires, the resistance of the wires adds itself to the resistance of the Pt100 and perturbs the measure. The best solution is to put two wires on each side of the Pt100, one pair to circulate a low current in the Pt100, the other to measure the potential difference. Because of this, precision Pt100 generally use four wires, soldered together by pair.

So, to make it simple, the Yocto-PT100 is useful foremost for those who need a very precise temperature measure, for example measures taken in a lab. But it is useful as well as for anyone that needs to measure the temperature of a liquid or remote body with a precision better than 1°C, like for instance to regulate precisely the temperature of a salted water aquarium.
